After several years off from canvas and oils, Joelle unpacked her supplies at Shady Tree Studios (soon to become Pump Project Art Complex) in 2005, and has been painting there ever since. She is inspired by simple shapes and patterns found in our surroundings, both natural and man-made, from the shadows cast by buildings’ crazy angles, to the curves in wind-bent blades of grass. A recent obsession is old photographs. Many newer works reference black and white pictures from 1930s magazines, or grandparents’ albums, and are combined with ideas, images, and colors from newer sources. She works in oil, watercolor, and occasionally acrylic.
